Discography (Discogram)

How Discography Works

During the procedure:

  • A small amount of contrast dye is injected into the targeted spinal disc
  • Imaging is used to evaluate the internal structure of the disc
  • The physician observes whether the injection reproduces the patient’s typical pain

This information helps identify which disc may be responsible for the symptoms.

When Discography Is Recommended

Discography may be considered when:

  • The exact source of back pain is unclear
  • Multiple discs appear abnormal on imaging
  • Surgical or intradiscal treatment is being considered
  • Other diagnostic tests have not provided clear answers

By identifying the precise pain source, discography helps physicians design a more targeted and effective treatment plan.
